The New York State Seal of Biliteracy

THE NEW YORK STATE SEAL OF BILITERACY

The Pawling Central School District has proudly participated in the New York State Seal of Biliteracy (NYSSB) program since 2017.  Over the past 6 years, 25 Pawling students have been awarded the seal and there are 8 candidates currently working towards earning the seal in the 2022-2023 academic year.

WHAT IS THE SEAL OF BILITERACY?

The Seal of Biliteracy recognizes students who have attained a high level of proficiency in the three standards/modes of communication:  interpretive, interpersonal and presentational, in one or more languages, in addition to English. The Seal of Biliteracy will be awarded to students who meet the criteria established by the Board of Regents. There is also a medallion that students receive to wear around their neck at graduation.

The intent of the New York State Seal of Biliteracy is to:

  • encourage the study of languages;
  • identify high school graduates with language and biliteracy skills for employers;
  • provide universities with additional information about applicants seeking admission;
  • prepare students with 21st century skills;
  • recognize the value of foreign and native language instruction in schools;
  • affirm the value of diversity in a multilingual society.

HOW DOES A STUDENT EARN THE SEAL OF BILITERACY?

 Each candidate for the Seal of Biliteracy must complete an application and meet the New York State requirements.  The Pawling High School’s NYSSB Committee reviews and evaluates the student’s eligibility. Based on the state requirements, most candidates will create and present a summative project to a panel that assesses their qualifications.  Candidates are assigned a mentor to guide them through the process.  Applicants must apply by Nov. 1 of their senior year.
